How do I know if my email account is POP or IMAP?

Personal email usually falls under the POP or IMAP category. Examples of POP email accounts include Gmail, or mail from your home Internet service provider (such as EarthLink, SBC Yahoo! or Comcast). Some small businesses also use POP mail for their employees.

In contrast, Exchange Server email uses a different protocol from POP or IMAP. Not sure which type of email you have? Contact your email service provider or your IT department.

Note: Any email that you can get only from a webpage, such as Yahoo! standard email (not Yahoo! Mail Plus), is not POP email. You won't be able to view these emails in the Messaging application. Instead, go to the web browser.

What do I need to set up a POP or IMAP account?

Before you start, gather this information:

Email user name The user name associated with this email account. Sometimes your user name is the part of your email address before the "@" and other times it's your full email address. Contact your email provider to find out your user name. Example: johndoe

Email password The password associated with this email account. If you forgot your password, or aren't sure what it should be, contact your email provider or IT department. Example: j0hnd03

Account type The kind of email your email service provider uses: POP or IMAP. If you're not sure, contact your email provider.

Incoming mail server Get this server info from your email service provider. Example: pop.palm.com

Outgoing mail server Also get this server info from your email service provider. Example: smtp.palm.com

Domain Not needed for a POP3 account with an ISP; leave this space blank. May be required for a work account. Contact your email service provider to learn more.
